There are plenty of upscale and luxury elements to the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 that make it a standout model in the light-duty truck segment, but the exterior styling remains relatively traditional. North Americans like a truck to look like a truck, and few come as close to fully obliging as the Sierra 1500. As you go up the trim levels, you inevitably find more chrome and more features, but the upright and square are the name of the game even though the Sierra is an incredibly capable and technologically advanced vehicle.
It’s hard – if not impossible – to think of another type of vehicle that justifies placing a factory order rather than buying from stock than a full-size pickup truck, and the 2022 Sierra 1500 is no exception. There are six different trim levels to choose from, which isn’t a lot for a full-size pickup truck these days, but that’s the only starting point of creating the Sierra 1500 that’s exactly right for your taste and your requirements. The first trim level in the family is no longer called Base and is instead now called the Pro, and from there, the range goes to Elevation, SLT, AT4, and finally to the simply stunning Denali.
Once you decide on a trim level, you then have to choose from three cabs, three beds, four engines, two transmissions and two drivetrains, and that’s before you even think about colours, interior, wheel designs, and the incredibly extensive list of options and upgrade packages.
The big news on the engine front for 2022 is the dropping of the entry-level V-6, but the remaining quartet is superb, and they really do cover all the bases for today’s light-duty truck buyers. The base engine is now therefore, the excellent 2.7-litre turbo-four that develops 310 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque. Next is the 5.3-litre V-8, which provides the Sierra with 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. If a diesel engine is what you want under the hood of your new truck, you also have the option of a 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel that puts out 277 horsepower and a massive 460 lb.-ft. of torque.
Last but by no means least is the most powerful unit you can have in your Sierra 1500 is a sensational 6.2-litre gas V-8 that develops 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Depending on which engine you go for, you also have the choice of 8- and 10-speed automatic transmissions. All models up to and including the SLT are available in rear or four-wheel-drive versions, but the AT4 and the Denali are exclusively four-wheel-drive variants.
It would be quicker and easier to try pinning down what features are not available for the 2022 GMC Sierra than listing those that are, but even then, it would still take some considerable time and detective work to find something you can’t have on your new Sierra. Some of the real standout features of the 2022 Sierra 1500 include the six-function Multipro tailgate; an available Tire Pressure Monitoring system feature with the ProGrade Trailering system that provides real-time updates on the status of your trailer’s tires; and HD Surround Vision, Rear Camera Mirror and Bed View cameras that offer up to 15 camera views to optimize the view around the truck and compatible trailers.
