What’s in a name?

It’s categorized as a compact crossover SUV, and they share a name, but that’s about all the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV has in common with the existing Equinox you see on the roads of Thornhill, North York, Markham, Richmond Hill, and the Greater Toronto Area at the moment. The Equinox EV is a stylish and practical addition to Chevrolet’s growing electric vehicle lineup, but what makes this model more exciting than most is the fact it will boast a very affordable starting MSRP for such an advanced vehicle.

Putting it in perspective

It was easy to imagine potential owners being put off electric vehicles in the early days because their exterior styling left nobody in any doubt that they were something very different. That’s fine if you want to advertise your green credentials to the world, but most people just want a new vehicle that looks attractive and contemporary.

It’s probably more than fair to say that the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV would attract legions of new owners with its looks, regardless of its powertrain. The Equinox EV looks like a sporty, modern compact crossover SUV with a mildly elongated side profile with only a hint of station wagon about it, thanks to the high-riding SUV stance that many people love these days. The Equinox EV slots into the current Chevrolet SUV lineup nicely with some familiar SUV styling cues. And the only thing that gives the game away about its cutting-edge powertrain is the lack of a conventional front grille that’s only necessary for internal combustion engines.

Down to the nitty gritty

New 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV powertrains and performance

The 1LT version of the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV will attract much attention due to its affordable starting MSRP. But even though it’s affordable, it still boasts an impressive powertrain consisting of an electric motor and battery pack that send an estimated 210 horsepower and 242 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels. The all-important driving range on a full charge of its battery is approximately 400 kilometers, which is considerably further than the average driver covers in a day. Every model above the 1LT in the range will benefit from a larger battery pack that extends that range to an impressive and highly user-friendly 480 kilometers.

Extra power, performance, and capability are available from two-motor AWD versions of the Equinox EV and are also available across the lineup. These will generate an estimated 290 horsepower and 346 lb.-ft. of torque, which would still be a considerable amount of power if a crossover of this size was powered conventionally. The range of these versions will reduce a little to around 450 kilometers, but it’s hard to imagine that 30 kilometers will be off-putting for anyone interested in such an enticingly potent electric powertrain.

What’s the charge?

Potential EV converts are still understandably concerned with the day-to-day practicality of EVs, and the Equinox EV does an excellent job of addressing such concerns. The single-motor front-drive versions of the new Chevy Equinox EV can accommodate DC fast-charging at up to 150 kW, which means you can add up to 112 kilometers of driving range to the battery pack in as little as 10 minutes. When using a Level 2 charging facility, the standard 11.5-kW AC onboard charger supplied with the Equinox EV will add around 55 kilometers for every hour, it’s left on charge.

The top-of-the-range 3RS AWD version of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is a model that’s bound to get a lot of attention. The range-topper gets an even more practical 19.2-kW AC onboard charging system capable of adding 82 kilometers of range per hour with Level 2 charging. And those who are a little timid about such things will be pleased to learn that GM gives an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer guarantee with the Equinox EV battery, whichever comes first.
