A few pickup trucks will turn heads as you drive through Thornhill, North York, Markham, Richmond Hill, or anywhere else in the Greater Toronto Area, but not always for the right reasons. However, the latest 2024 GMC Canyon combines jaw-dropping exterior styling with best-in-class towing capacity and sensational off-road capability in a package that can’t fail to impress. With its stylish exterior and all the midsize capability you could ask for, the new Canyon has an appeal that’s likely to reach well beyond traditional truck buyers.
It wasn’t too long ago when some of the numbers associated with the 2024 GMC Canyon would have been entirely acceptable in the full-size, light-duty realm. It also used to be that if you wanted a smaller truck than a full-size model, you’d have to settle for a dramatic reduction in what you could tow and haul. But compromise isn’t a word you’d associate with the new Canyon with its factory lifts, higher stance, powerful engine, and outstanding off-road credentials.
The lowest maximum towing capacity of the 2024 Canyon is 2,495 kg (5,000 pounds), one trim level can tow up to 2,722 kg (6,000 pounds), but the others can all manage a best-in-class tow rating of 3,493 kg (7,700 pounds). The lowest maximum payload may sound entirely midsize at 458 kg (1,010 pounds), but a correctly specified 2024 GMC Canyon can handle a payload of up to 744 kg (1,640 pounds).
A lot of rationalization is happening in the auto business and elsewhere these days, making a lot of financial sense. Instead of making the Canyon available in vast configurations and specifications to cater to every possible shopper and application, GMC has decided to concentrate on the configurations people want and buy. That’s why every 2024 GMC Canyon comes in a crew cab body style with a 5-foot-2 bed and the same engine and transmission power in every version.
The lineup starts with the Canyon Elevation and then goes to the AT4, Denali, and the range-topping AT4X. The fact that there are two AT4 models should tell you that off-road readiness is the focus of the Canyon’s new direction. Elevation, AT4, and Denali models boast a 2.0-inch factory lift that delivers a ground clearance of 9.6 inches, but the AT4X gets a 3-inch lift, and ground clearance increases to 10.7 inches. However, the 2024 Canyon goes even further by introducing a new AEV edition of the AT4X. The AEV package adds distinctive 17-inch AEV wheels, 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tyres, heavy-duty skid plates, AEV steel bumpers, and is 1.5 inches taller than a conventional AT4X. The AEV is for shoppers who want ultimate off-road capability without sacrificing convenience features like a remote start, heated front seats, or an 11.3-inch infotainment system.
It would be easy to get carried away with the off-road equipment you can have with the latest Canyon. The AT4 and Denali models get a standard limited-slip differential, and AT4X models feature power-locking front and rear differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers. A 2.7-litre turbo-four engine powers every model, but unlike its GM stablemate, every model gets the High Output version that puts out 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque.
So we know it can tow, haul, and go off-road, but what else has the new Canyon got to offer? The answer is technology and a lot of it. This is easily the most advanced Canyon ever, with up to five drive modes: Baja (exclusive to AT4X), Terrain, Off-road, Normal, and a Tow/haul Mode. Other advanced tech features include a more dynamic, high-resolution infotainment screen and driver information centre with a best-in-class, 11-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a class-exclusive 6.3-inch diagonal Head-Up Display to show navigation, safety alerts, speed, audio, and other vital information.
There’s plenty to like about the 2024 GMC Canyon, and it would be easy to fall for it on looks alone. The AT4X, in particular, looks sensational, but it gets even better when it more than delivers the capability the stunning styling promises.
